July 4th Parade

Concord AAUW rode and walked in the 2009 4th of July parade to highlight AAUW’s presence in the community. Flyers, ball point pens and good will were distributed to the spectators by Lana and Maile while the majority of the group rode in the back of a well-decorated pickup truck and played patriotic songs on red and blue kazoos. A great time was had by all.

The branch walked in the 2005 Concord 4th of July parade and impersonated famous women in history. The branch offers talks from these famous women to local grammar schools.

Members of the Concord Branch give school supplies and new backpacks to the Ygnacio Valley Elementary School each Fall. At Christmas time, two needy families are adopted and receive gifts and food from members. Each summer the Branch sponsors two Concord area junior high girls to attend Tech Trek, a week long science program sponsored by AAUW at regional universities and colleges.

A bit of history . . .
The Concord Branch of AAUW was chartered in 1948, with a membership of 12. We have been an active participant in the Concord community for over 50 years:

Our members have taken part in community events, supported local students with scholarships and fellowships, and sponsored community forums on topics of interest to our branch. Branch members have also taken an active role in projects aimed at the betterment of societal problems e.g. teen-age drug abuse and battered women.

In 1949 we became heavily involved in the establishment of the Contra Costa Community Colleges. In 1959 our branch was instrumental in relocating the Concord Library from a small Carnegie building in Todos Santos Park to its much larger current location on Salvio Street. More recently we have had branch members seated on boards and commissions within the city government and members who have served as City Council-members, City Clerk and as the Mayor of Concord.

After fine-tuning their leadership skills within the branch, our members have represented us as officers and board members at both the State and Association levels of our organization.
